To celebrate Halloween, we explore its history in art and literature. After establishing its roots in prehistoric Ireland, we proceed to Spain, where witches inspired Goya’s famous Black Paintings. Crossing the Atlantic, we visit the actual village in New York State that provided the setting for Washington Irving’s Legend of Sleepy Hollow, called America’s first ghost story. Our tour ends in Mexico with Posada’s calavera (skeletons) in honor of the Day of the Dead.
