Description

Ancient Egypt is one of our favorite subjects to explore at World Virtual Tours, always with certified local guides and highly qualified scholars. For this special Masterclass, we are taking you one step closer to real archaeological research with Professor Francesco Tiradritti, the Egyptologist who spent over 20 years excavating and studying the Tomb of Harwa in Luxor, in the Theban Necropolis near the magnificent Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut.

What does a typical day at an archaeological excavation really look like?

This Masterclass retraces twenty years of archaeological excavations at the Cenotaph of Harwa in Luxor, taking participants through the discoveries, challenges, and extraordinary experiences of field research, as told through the narrative of a hypothetical day on site.

The Cenotaph of Harwa: A Monument of Extraordinary Importance

Located on the West Bank of Luxor, in the heart of one of the world’s most important archaeological landscapes, the Cenotaph of Harwa is carved into the limestone bedrock of the Asasif plain, less than a mile from the Valley of the Kings.

Between 1996 and 2018, the Italian Archaeological Mission in Luxor (MAIL) conducted extensive excavations at the site, uncovering evidence that has significantly reshaped our understanding of ancient Egypt during the 25th Dynasty, when the Nile Valley was ruled by Kushite kings from present-day Sudan.

Who Was Harwa?

Harwa lived during the late 8th century BC and served as Great Steward to Amenirdis, the Divine Adoratrice of Amun.

Eight statues of Harwa are known today—an exceptionally high number for a non-royal official. Together with the enormous scale of his cenotaph, covering approximately 50,000 square feet, they testify to his remarkable political and administrative importance.

One particularly significant discovery was a small funerary figurine depicting Harwa holding the regalia of pharaonic kingship. Found during the MAIL excavations, this object prompted further investigation into his actual position, leading researchers to conclude that Harwa effectively governed southern Egypt on behalf of the Kushite pharaohs.

The Pharaonic Renaissance

The Cenotaph of Harwa is also a masterpiece of the so-called Pharaonic Renaissance, a period of artistic and cultural renewal associated with the arrival of the Kushite rulers.

Its architecture and decoration reflect a remarkable combination of archaism and innovation: ancient Egyptian artistic forms were revived, reinterpreted, and transformed into new expressions.

This artistic revival, reminiscent in certain respects of the Italian Renaissance, reached exceptional heights in the decoration of Harwa’s monument, one of the earliest and most impressive examples of this distinctive style.

Twenty Years of Discoveries

Beyond its architectural and artistic significance, the Cenotaph of Harwa has yielded discoveries that illuminate lesser-known aspects of Egyptian civilization.

Through the firsthand experience of Professor Francesco Tiradritti, participants will explore the everyday reality of archaeological research and the discoveries made over two decades of excavations.

These findings offer a perspective on a pivotal period in Egyptian history, when cultural traditions that would later influence the Greek world—and, through it, Western civilization—were taking shape.
