Welcome to Chaltura, a charming town in Imbabura that will introduce you to one of Ecuador’s most fascinating culinary and cultural traditions. Known as the “Cuy Capital of Ecuador,” Chaltura will offer us a unique glimpse into a tradition where the guinea pig, or cuy, will be much more than just a traditional dish—it will be part of everyday life and local culture. During our virtual walking tour, we will explore the streets of Chaltura and discover how this little animal will become one of the town’s most recognizable symbols. We will see how cuy will be featured in local restaurants and traditional food businesses, and we will learn why Chaltura will be especially famous for its traditional fried cuy. But the most unexpected part of our experience will be a visit to a local home. We will virtually step inside and discover something that may surprise you: keeping cuyes at home will be completely normal for many local families. Some will raise them for their livelihood and to sell them, while others will simply care for them as part of their household. We will learn about local traditions, food, family life, and the relationship between the community and these fascinating little animals. This will be more than a waliking le a food tour—it will be a journey into authentic Ecuadorian daily life, far beyond the typical tourist route.
