Description

When we talk about festivals in India, Durga Puja in West Bengal stands out as something truly unique. It’s not just a religious event, but a grand blend of ritual, tradition, and community spirit. For five days each autumn, Goddess Durga is worshipped with great devotion through a series of well-defined rites—beginning with her ceremonial arrival, continuing through daily offerings and prayers, and ending with her symbolic farewell. Every ritual, whether it’s the Bodhon (welcoming the goddess), the rhythmic beat of the dhak (drums), the solemn Sandhi Puja at midnight, or the final Visarjan immersion in the river), carries a deep meaning and connects people across generations. If you are interested to know how Indians celebrate this festival of victory over evil, this talk/tour will be an ideal one for your indulgence and curiosity.

Professional Tour Guide

Diptarup G.

I’m Dr Diptarup Ghosh Dastidar, a research fellow at Banaras Hindu University, India. My PhD thesis deals with comics studies and spatiality, but my interests span farther wide into popular culture, gender studies, and Indology. I have taught at various universities in India and am currently teaching literature and language to school kids in Uttar Pradesh. Living in the historic city of Varanasi (aka Benares), I have been driven into learning and talking about ancient Indian scriptures, mythology, and philosophy. I am very passionate about socialising and I love lecturing! I’m also a musician and vocalist in the alt-rock band – The Spring Leaves – while I’m not teaching, or reading! I hope that I’ll be able to add some value to your experience with World Virtual Tours. Cheers!
