In the heart of Beijing, a Tibetan Lama Temple exists, with a 300-year-old history, involving Mongol and Manchu cultures as well. Our tour of this temple, which was created from a prince’s palace, involves various gates, yards, and halls with many images, including the largest Buddhist statue in the world that was made from a single piece of wood. Its white sandalwood tree trunk was a gift from the 7th Dalai Lama, transported from Tibet, and carved in Beijing in the mid-eighteenth century. How do the temple’s many images, large and small, evoke transcendence and yet self-dissolution?

I am Mark Pizzato, an MFA, PhD, and Professor of Theatre and Film at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. I teach various subjects, including art, architecture, music, dance, religious studies, communication, and anthropology. My latest book, European Churches and Chinese Temples as Neuro-Theatrical Sites, was published by Bloomsbury in 2024. I have authored six prior books on global theatre history, onscreen animal-human depictions, and the psychology of theater and cinema, among other topics. My short films have won awards, and I have also self-published a sci-fi-farce novella, Outer Space Speaks, available on Amazon.
