Live Walk in La Paz – the highest square in the world – history, architecture and pigeons!
The highest square in the world isn’t the largest square in the world, but there really is a lot to see and learn about. It is full of history, architecture and… pigeons! It is always a lot of fun to visit virtually with Renan and his wife Paula.
Bolivia was originally part of a different country – and it wasn’t in South America. One of the people who was instrumental in gaining independence it is commemorated with a statue in the Square. He’s clearly held in high respect by the people of Bolivia, though quite possibly not by the pigeons, who often seem to miss the point of statues.
La Paz is often described as a capital city, but its status isn’t quite that simple. There is another capital city which remains the official capital, but as Renan explains, La Paz is a far more advantageous location. The construction of La Paz is also very interesting. A geographical feature, which now mostly covered, played a very important role.
Some of the history of La Paz can also be seen in the buildings which surround the square. It has a palace, which is not inhabited by a monarch – or anyone else, for that matter. It is actually somebody’s workplace. There is also a cathedral. One of the buildings which is visible from the square was built in 2018. It is likely most people would know which it was without being told. It does not come close to the older buildings in terms of elegance.
Renan is an excellent guide. His tours are informative and a lot of fun and he and Paula are always very warm and welcoming.
