Wonderful Jerusalem guide
Neil is a very informative and easy to follow guide. His tours are the most interesting.
Interesting and informative
I didn’t know anything about the Romans in Scotland until this session and it was very interesting. I enjoyed the explanations and the photos. Neil’s accent was nice to hear too!
Interesting, fun and accessible
Neil’s talk was very enjoyable. The level of the detail, combined with the very interesting images, gave a very strong picture of life in Roman Scotland.
He started off by telling us how approaches to archaeology, at least with regard to studying Scotland, has changed in recent times, then he shared some if the incredible information that has been discovered. It was very interesting to learn about the difference between a fort and an enclosure – the words have fairly specific meanings in day-to-day English, so it is especially helpful when words like this are explained in an archaeological context.
Neil also told us about the different Roman invasions and the varying reasons behind them, and revealed the existence of other reasons for contact between the Romans and the people living in Scotland. It was interesting to learn what seems to have been of greatest importance to the people in Scotland when sourcing commodities and to hear about the foods which were typically eaten at that time. Some are commonly eaten today in the UK; others definitely are not!
Neil is clearly an incredibly knowledgeable archaeologist who has put together an interesting, fun and accessible talk. I’m looking forward to seeing more from him.
