Ciutadella Park – beautiful and full of history
Ciutadella Park is a lovely place and it would be extremely pleasant just to walk around it and enjoy the many beautiful buildings, trees and lamp-posts (yes, I did say lamp-posts). But there is much more to the park than what can be seen there today and the history of the park and the many events really are interesting and exciting.
At one time, there was a fortress in the area. This would usually be considered a positive as its usual function would be to protect the people of Barcelona from attack, but this fortress was built for a different reason entirely. Later on in history, the park was used for a far more positive reason. Many of the buildings which can be seen today were originally built as part of this event. They include a Parliamentary building, a school and a museum, but they once had very different roles.
It is a very beautiful park today. At the entrance is a very special archway and a long pathway is lined with many different types of trees. The buildings, whose architects include one who is very well-known in Barcelona, all look different and distinctive. There is also a lake with a waterfall (not in operation today, but it’s difficult to feel too disappointed when the tour was otherwise so wonderful) and its own smaller version of the archway. Also in the park is a zoo and although it was not possible to see inside it (though there was a surprise appearance from some birds), it boasts an impressive range of animals.
Jesús told the many and varied stories in this tour well and his tours are always a lot of fun.
Jesús brings the people of the past back to life
Saint Teresa is someone I’ve barely heard of, but because of Jesús, I now know a lot more about her and she was an incredible human being. It was very interesting to hear about her life as a child and an adult and to learn about all she achieved.
Someone I’m much more familiar with is an actor who lived in Ávila and it was exciting to see the house he lived in. There is also a beautiful cathedral and the very well-preserved town wall with its different gates, which all had to be protected. We walked around the wall before going inside to see the main square and discovered what it was used for now.
We also learned something about the symbols, including the meaning of the towers and the lions, which seemed to be everywhere. It’s a beautiful place to visit.
Jesús is an excellent guide and he does a wonderful job of bringing historical figures back to life for us.
An engaging guide and a very enjoyable tour
It is always really good to reconnect with a guide I know from other platforms and it really was wonderful to be touring with Jesús again. The Palace and Gardens are exceptionally beautiful (and I think they would be even without the bright sunshine we were lucky enough to enjoy) and whether you like buildings, trees, statues, water or green fields, there will certainly be something to admire. But in addition to looking, we were listening, and Jesús had a great deal of fascinating information to share about the Palace and Gardens. Both history and mythology play an important role and Jesús narrates both brilliantly – even if you know some or even all of this already, I’m sure you will enjoy Jesús’ engaging style. His enthusiasm for La Granja is as obvious as his talents as a tour guide and his depth of knowledge and it really was a very enjoyable hour.
Wonderful
