Description
On January 1, 1994, the exact day the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) went into effect, the world woke up to a stunning reality: an indigenous guerrilla army, faces covered in ski masks, had taken control of several municipalities in Chiapas, Mexico. The Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) shook the global political landscape, launching the first “postmodern revolution” of the internet age. Led by the charismatic, pipe-smoking Subcomandante Marcos, the movement wasn’t just fighting for land—they were demanding dignity and indigenous autonomy. This virtual tour will take us to unpack the origins, the dramatic 12 days of armed conflict, and the lasting social and political legacy of a rebellion that changed Mexico forever.
– The Backdrop of Rebellion: Understanding the historical marginalization of the Maya peoples in Chiapas.
– The Declaration of the Lacandon Jungle: A breakdown of the EZLN’s core demands (work, land, housing, food, health, education, independence, freedom, democracy, justice, and peace)
– The taking of San Cristobal de las Casas
– Subcomandante Marcos and The Cyber-Guerrilla: How a movement in the deep jungle mastered global media, using early internet communiqués, poetry, and simbolismo to win the war of public opinion
– The Zapatist Legacy Today
