Description
Although on the surface it appears to be a simple question, what it really means to be ‘Indian’ is a thought riddled with philosophical and historical oddities that need to be understood on various levels. Were the people living in the Indian landmass always called Indians? How do the identity politics affect the lifestyle, social habits, and religious beliefs of the people and vice-versa? A deeper understanding of these issues in the history of this landmass, especially post-Indus Valley Civilization, would reveal the complexity and vastness of the idea of what it means to be an Indian today. This tour will clarify all aspects of this question and open avenues of questioning and understanding our individual identities. If you want to reimagine the possible tenets that guide the construction of your own nationality and know some interesting things about India in the process, this tour is just the one for you.

Diptarup G.
I’m Dr Diptarup Ghosh Dastidar, a research fellow at Banaras Hindu University, India. My PhD thesis deals with comics studies and spatiality, but my interests span farther wide into popular culture, gender studies, and Indology. I have taught at various universities in India and am currently teaching literature and language to school kids in Uttar Pradesh. Living in the historic city of Varanasi (aka Benares), I have been driven into learning and talking about ancient Indian scriptures, mythology, and philosophy. I am very passionate about socialising and I love lecturing! I’m also a musician and vocalist in the alt-rock band – The Spring Leaves – while I’m not teaching, or reading! I hope that I’ll be able to add some value to your experience with World Virtual Tours. Cheers!
