Description

In the 19th century, Tbilisi changed almost beyond recognition, growing from an old trading town between empires, languages, and caravan routes into the administrative, commercial, and cultural capital of the Caucasus. On this virtual walk, we will explore a city in transformation: more European, more international, and more ambitious, yet still unmistakably Georgian and deeply Caucasian in spirit. We will see how Georgian, Armenian, German, Russian, Persian, and wider European influences met in the streets, courtyards, façades, balconies, and new neighborhoods of the expanding city. This was not a simple story of “Europeanization,” but a far more fascinating process of adaptation, taste, money, and imagination. From classical façades and solid merchant houses to rustic old dwellings, carved wooden balconies, eclectic apartment buildings, and elegant Art Nouveau details, we will follow the architectural timeline of 19th-century Tbilisi and talk about the people behind its urban boom: traders, craftsmen, hoteliers, brewers, bankers, architects, intellectuals, and families who wanted their homes and businesses to reflect their success. Behind every doorway there is a story of ambition, migration, trade, and change. Join Anna for a story-rich walk through the Tbilisi that was no longer just a picturesque old town on the Silk Road, but a modern capital of the Caucasus, where East and West argued, traded, borrowed, competed, and created something completely unique.
