Description

The Temple of Edfu was dedicated to the falcon-headed god Horus, and is therefore also known as the Temple of Horus. It was built on the west bank of the city Edfu, and the construction of this temple took about 180 years. It is considered to be the second largest temple of ancient Egypt, after Karnak Temples. Over the centuries the temple was buried under desert sand and was nearly invisible until it was dug out in 1860 by a French Egyptologist. Since Edfu Temple is nearly intact and well-preserved, it serves as a great example of ancient Egyptian temples, making it a must-see monument.

We will take you there on this virtual Nile cruise to discover the site and explain the historic and religious significance of this great temple.

The Temple of Kom Ombo, which is located in the town of Kom Ombo in the Aswan region, was built during the same time as Edfu Temple during the Ptolemaic kingdom. The temple was erected in honor of the crocodile god Sobek and the falcon-headed god Horus. Kom Ombo Temple shows some very unique carvings of the god Sobek and his relation to the King Ptolemy VI, and of the medical tools being used by the ancient surgeons. Next to the temple is the Crocodile Museum, which displays crocodile mummies that were discovered in the nearby area.

During this virtual tour you will learn about the history and religion attached to this interesting Temple of Kom Ombo.
