Course Description
In this course we look into the ancient history of Mesopotamia. We shall look at how and when the first cities developed in Mesopotamia from about 5000 BC. Hereby, we will look at houses, cities, and palaces. We will also see how the first empires developed: the kingdoms of Sumeria, Babylonia and Assyria. And finally, we shall look into their writing system: cuneiform.
Tutor: Dr. Martine Diepenbroek
Dr. Martine Diepenbroek is a Dutch classicist and historian of antiquity, working as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Johannesburg. She specializes in communications security and secret messaging in the ancient world and has published several articles and a book. As a historian, she also has extensive knowledge of Greek, Roman, Mesopotamian and Egyptian history, archaeology and culture.
