Description
Long before satellites and digital navigation, the Romans created something extraordinary: a colossal marble map of their city, so detailed that it continues to help archaeologists identify ancient buildings nearly eighteen centuries later! Now, for the first time, this remarkable masterpiece can be admired in the newly opened Forma Urbis Museum. Join our archaeologist Alba for a special videowalk through this fascinating new museum, just a few steps away from the Colosseum. Together, we’ll explore the surviving fragments of the Forma Urbis Romae and the lovely garden where the museum was created. We will discover how this ambitious map was created, why it represents one of the greatest archaeological discoveries connected with ancient Rome, and how scholars still use it today to reconstruct monuments and recognize newly unearthed structures across the city. Beyond its carved marble fragments lies an extraordinary story of innovation, research, and rediscovery. As we follow the traces of Rome’s ancient streets, temples, baths, and public buildings, we’ll uncover how a map carved nearly two thousand years ago continues to transform our understanding of the Eternal City. Join us for an unforgettable online experience and discover the Forma Urbis Museum—not simply as a collection of ancient stones, but as the key to unlocking the lost landscape of ancient Rome.

Ciao! I'm Alba, a Roman archaeologist and licensed tour guide. Even though I'm Italian through and through, I've spent quite a bit of time living on the East Coast of the US and in England. After snagging a BA in Conservation of Cultural Heritage and not one, but two MAs in Archaeology and History of Architecture, I went all out and got my Ph.D. in Archaeology back in 2015. But you know what? I quickly realized that I'm more into storytelling than hardcore research. So, I ditched the academic life and dove headfirst into guiding tours and educating folks in museums all across central Italy. I'm all about uncovering the hidden gems of Rome and the surrounding areas in Lazio. Sure, the Colosseum and Trevi Fountain are cool, but there's so much more to see! So, join me for some passionate dives into the Great Beauty of Rome. Let's explore its fascinating history and art scene together!
