Description
Göbeklitepe took the world by surprise — but the hills around it are full of secrets still coming to light. Just a few kilometers away, sites like Karahantepe, Sayburç, and Sefertepe are producing extraordinary discoveries: stunning human sculptures, mysterious underground chambers, and carvings that continue to astonish everyone who sees them. This virtual tour explores these neighboring sites up close, following the latest excavations to build a richer, fuller picture of the people who shaped this landscape 12,000 years ago. Together, they show us that Göbeklitepe was never a single wonder standing alone — it was part of a much bigger world.
– Karahantepe: Göbeklitepe’s sister site, 60 km away, with over 250 stone pillars, stunning human sculptures, and a dramatic underground ritual chamber
– Sayburç: home to some of the most vivid relief carvings in the region, including a recently discovered sculpture believed to represent death rituals
– Sefertepe: the newest surprise: two carved human faces unearthed in the latest excavation season, each in a completely different artistic style
– A group of 12 sites that reveal an interconnected network of communities stretching across southeastern Turkey 12,000 years ago
