We were soooo lucky both with the weather and to have Jimmy as our guide. He was so knowledgeable and made our visit really special. And he took great pictures and videos. 5+!

The year is already half-over for those in the UK and many other parts of the world, but new beginnings can happen at any time. The Winter Solstice marks the start of the New Year in Peru and many people gathered at Machu Picchu in order to welcome the sunrise.

Machu Picchu is an old Inca word and it refers to an old mountain which is located between the Andes and the Amazon jungle. The height of it allowed us to see across the other mountains to where the sun was rising. As usual, the sun was taking its time, but it didn’t matter because Jimmy had so much to share about this fascinating part of the world.

Machu Picchu was very important in Inca times, when the area was significantly more heavily-populated than it is now. Jimmy spoke about what happened at Machu Picchu in Inca times and why everyone chose to leave. The story certainly has a sad element, but it’s also very exciting, as are the recent archaeological discoveries which suggest the site is much older than was previously thought.

Jimmy also spoke about the languages spoken in the area and the people who lived there, the animals are considered sacred and the rituals which took place on Machu Picchu. He also mentioned the temperature, the seasons and micro-climates, which gave a very interesting picture of what it felt like to be in Machu Picchu now, in addition to speaking about its very interesting history. Finally, we enjoyed a gentle sunrise with soft light and lots of clouds.

It was lovely to see in a very peaceful New Year with Jimmy. It was very interesting to hear about what is known about Machu Picchu’s past and to imagine what might be discovered in the future.

This was an emotional tour to watch the sunrise. Jimmy gave a lot of information while we waited for the sunrise, which included some of his personal experience. It was a very emotional tour. Everyone should join this tour at least once in your life. I follow all of his tours.
