Description

It is the year 900 AD. You walk one morning through the fresh jungle of Yucatan. You ascend a hillside and arrive at a large courtyard surrounded by rectangular palaces built with stone in shades of yellow and pink. The walls are finely decorated and the details in the rock are impressive. In the middle of the courtyard, you see some of the Mayan rulers discussing important matters about the fate of the city. In the background, the fog dissipates and you can see the great Temple of the Magician, a 34-meter-high pyramid that honors some of the most important gods for the Mayans, including Chaac, deity of rain. You are in Uxmal, one of the richest Mayan cities in terms of architecture that ever existed.

On this trip we will also visit Calakmul, a few kilometers from Uxmal, and which is not far behind in terms of beauty and dimensions. The feeling when walking through Calakmul is that of walking through a recently abandoned Mayan city, going through more than 60 structures that are still standing in the middle of closed vegetation. This perspective changes radically when you climb to the top of the great pyramid at 55 meters high, from where you can see a unique view of the jungle that surrounds and envelops the main palaces. We will discover through the hieroglyphic interpretations the great rivalry of this city against Tikal, another of the most recognized Mayan points.

We will end this trip in Palenque, climbing into the mountains of Chiapas, Mexico. Jaguars and snakes lurk in the surroundings of this, one of the most advanced Mayan cities in science and technology. We will visit its observatory tower and we will go through its mythical stairs. Palenque is the jewel of Mesoamerican archeology because that is where the tomb of Pakal, one of its illustrious rulers, was discovered. We will detail everything that was found in Pakal’s tomb and the theories surrounding the great intellectual development of his society.

These 3 cities of the classic Mayan route were mysteriously abandoned by their inhabitants. We will talk about their growth and influence and the great legacy they left in this part of the world.
