Description

Walk with me through Alexander Park on a clear, sunny day, following the paths once used by Nicholas II, Alexandra Feodorovna and their children. This was one of the family’s favourite places for walks, games and quiet time away from court life. We will visit the colourful Chinese Village, created in the eighteenth century as part of Catherine the Great’s fascination with Chinese-inspired design, and see the Children’s Town, built for the young Romanovs as their own miniature world. Surrounded by trees, ponds and small pavilions, the park reveals a more private and personal side of life at Alexander Palace. Welcome to Alexander Palace, the most private and intimate home of the last Romanovs. Far from the ceremonial world of central Saint Petersburg, Nicholas II and Alexandra Feodorovna tried to build a quieter family life here, surrounded by their children, routines and a sense of safety. Yet this palace also witnessed illness, growing isolation, political tension and, in the end, the collapse of their world. In this four-part series, we will follow the story of the imperial family through the interiors of Alexander Palace, from the early years of Nicholas and Alexandra’s marriage to the final months before exile.
