Description
For more than three decades, there was no address in Hollywood more glamorous—or more notorious—than the Garden of Allah. Hidden behind lush gardens on Sunset Boulevard, this legendary hotel became home to some of the biggest names of the Golden Age. Writers like F. Scott Fitzgerald and Dorothy Parker found inspiration here. Stars like Humphrey Bogart, Greta Garbo, Errol Flynn, John Barrymore, Gloria Stuart, Tallulah Bankhead, and countless others came to escape the studios, celebrate their successes, nurse their failures, carry on secret romances, and throw unforgettable parties. Originally built as the private estate of silent film star Alla Nazimova, the Garden of Allah evolved into Hollywood’s ultimate creative playground—a place where careers were launched, scandals unfolded, literary masterpieces were written, and Hollywood legends were born. In this rich presentation filled with archival photos, Hollywood historian April Clemmer takes you inside the fascinating history of this extraordinary property, exploring:
- The remarkable story of Alla Nazimova and how her estate became the Garden of Allah
- The colorful personalities who lived, worked, and partied there
- Famous romances, scandals, practical jokes, and unforgettable Hollywood stories
- Rare photographs and promotional materials that bring the property back to life
- The surprising events that led to the Garden of Allah’s demolition—and what stands on the site today
