EVENT DETAILS
- Immersive Experience
- Nero: a young, inexperienced ruler or megalomaniac?
- Live Q&A
- Contents suitable for children
EVENT DESCRIPTION
Nero is known as an eccentric man, a ruthless matricidal and tyrant. As the last male descendant of the emperor Augustus, he became emperor when he was not yet 17 and was driven to suicide by his adversaries at 30.
His short rule was so turbulent and saw very difficult events including the Great Fire of Rome and Boudicca’s rebellion in Britain. He came to power in a period of great changes for Roman society.
Who was the real emperor Nero?
His life is narrated by Tacitus, Suetonius and Cassius Dio who wrote several decades after Nero’s death, starting from the Flavian era.
Did they try to legitimize the new imperial dynasty through the delegitimization of Nero?
If he was so bad, why was he so much hailed by the people, as we can see from the many graffiti engraved by the walls of Rome? Let’s start again from contemporary sources, from the imperial palace in Rome, from the streets of Pompeii to follow the young emperor’s rise and fall and make up our own mind about Nero! Was he a young, inexperienced ruler trying his best in a divided society or was he the megalomaniac fiddling while Rome burned?
We believe knowledge must be FREE, available to everyone. Just get your Free pass and ENJOY!
