Description
Predating the pyramids and Stonehenge by over 5,000 years, Göbeklitepe and its neighboring sites in southeastern Turkey are rewriting everything we thought we knew about human prehistory. This virtual tour takes you across the entire landscape from Göbeklitepe’s massive T-shaped limestone pillars, weighing up to 20 tons and carved with foxes, vultures, and scorpions, to the extraordinary discoveries emerging right now at Karahantepe, Sayburç, and Sefertepe: stunning human sculptures, mysterious underground chambers, and carvings that continue to astonish everyone who sees them. These monuments were built by hunter-gatherers and yet they created an entire world of ritual, art, and architecture across a network of at least a dozen interconnected sites. The tour will walk you through the excavated sites and examine the evidence and main theories on their function. The question of why they built at all remains unsolved and the ground is still giving up its secrets. No prior knowledge needed. Just bring your curiosity.
- Göbeklitepe’s enclosures built with T-shaped monolithic pillars, up to 5.5 meters tall and 20 tons, adorned with carved low-reliefs of foxes, vultures, scorpions, and boars
- Karahantepe: over 250 stone pillars, realistic human sculptures, and a dramatic underground ritual chamber
- Sayburç: home to vivid relief carvings, including a recently discovered sculpture believed to represent death rituals
- Sefertepe: two carved human faces unearthed in the latest excavation season, each in a completely different artistic style
We believe knowledge must be FREE, available to everyone. Just get your Free pass and ENJOY!
