EVENT DESCRIPTION
Art and architecture are mirrors of a society. They reflect the state of its values, especially in times of crisis or transition” (Paul Zanker).
With this virtual tour we’ll be taking a journey back to ancient Rome to discuss a topic of perennial fascination to anyone interested in leadership, power and public relations. We’ll be talking about Emperor Augustus and his control over his public image exploring the most incredible monuments and artifacts he commissioned: the Mausoleum of Augustus, the Pantheon, the Altar of Peace, the statue of Augustus at Prima Porta and the Gemma Augustea.
We know him as the founder of Roman Empire who rised to prominence in 44 B.C. – when his great-uncle Caesar was murdered – at the tender age of 19. Rather than sink under the weight of opposition from all of the powerful men around him, young Octavian consolidated his position until 27 B.C. when the Senate granted him the ancient title “Augustus”, meaning “the increaser” but also “the increased”. This title is only the beginning of a new image of power which is certainly influenced by the Eastern-Egyptian model.
What’s the connection between the Pantheon and the Mausoleum of Augustus? Why does Augusts want to be born in the sign of Capricorn in the Gemma Augustea? And what’s the pax augustea? Let’s find it out together diving into the propaganda machine of Ancient Rome.
