Description
Where do the terms “theatre,” “mime,” and “catharsis” come from? How do they relate to our social and mass media today? This talk involves images of ancient Greek theatre ruins at Epidauros, Delphi, and Athens, plus related sites from ancient Rome, to consider how the tragic (or tragicomic) catharsis described by Aristotle might have played out in those cultures or been replaced by more melodramatic entertainment, with good versus evil, victim-hero-villain temptations that continue today.
