Course Description
This course provides a structured examination of Indian mythology, focusing on its cosmology, key deities, and foundational texts. Through four detailed lessons, participants will explore the ancient Indian worldview, the cyclic nature of cosmic events, and the principal gods, as well as the literature that preserves these narratives.
Lesson 1 - The Indian Mythological Cosmos
November 16th, 2024
Every myth has a genesis story and a timeline of the world populated by the creator and all subsequent creations. The Indian mythological cosmos is riddled with cycles of life and death, and most of the events are predestined. This lesson is an introduction to the cosmology and worldview as mentioned in ancient Indian scriptures. You will know about the various realms and ages and understand the context of the upcoming lessons.
Lesson 2 - Dashavatar. The Ten Avatars of Lord Vishnu
November 23rd, 2024
As mentioned in the previous lesson on the Indian mythological cosmos, there is a cyclicality to the succession of events and every age in a single cycle is marked with the recurrence of Lord Vishnu, one of the three major gods. In the current cycle, Vishnu is credited with ten appearances in an earthly form, be it as animal or as man, also known as avatars. This lesson gives a detailed account of these ten avatars of Lord Vishnu, also called Dashavatar, to understand the multifaceted nature of the Indian God of Life and Balance.
Lesson 3 - The Many Names and Forms of Lord Shiva
November 30th, 2024
One of the most important aspects of Indian gods and goddesses is that every single one of them has multiple names, and each name has a story attributed to its chronicling. The previous lesson was about the various avatars of Lord Vishnu. This lesson covers the many names and forms of the Lord Shiva, the Indian god of Destruction and Rebirth. Lord Shiva has been called by different names in different parts of the country as well as in different scriptures. This lesson details all these stories to give a clearer idea of the nature and the disposition of Lord Shiva.
Lesson 4 - Indian Mythological Texts. The Puranas
December 7th, 2024
Much after the Vedas and the Indian epics (Ramayana and Mahabharata) were written, there was a massive literature centred around the stories of the various gods and goddesses. This literature has been called as Puranas, given that these are age-old stories which have their roots in the earlier Vedic literature, but were conceived and recorded much later. This lesson gives a thorough introduction to the Puranas and aims to acquaint the listeners to the 18 major Puranic books, most of which are the basis of the way gods and goddesses are viewed and worshipped today.
