This course will have 4 lessons dedicated to the Art through Middle Ages in Europe, discovering the different art styles that develop in Europe from the fall of Rome to the end of the Gothic period. 1- Before Romanesque / 2 – Romanesque / 3 – Gothic / 4 – impact, legacy and revivals
Lesson 1 - Before Romanesque

We will learn about the influence of late antiquity in Christian art, the impact of Islamic art in Europe, and all the other variations that create a very eclectic and exciting world of artistic development and freedom.

Join us for this crash lesson about everything you need to know about Romanesque. From its origins to the further stages of its development, we will learn how different European societies used it to build their legacies and feudal structures in the high middle ages.
Lesson 3 - Gothic

Today we learn how the stylish Gothic artistic move developed in Europe. We will understand different geographical variations from central Europe to the British Isles. We will also discover the religious reason why Gothic took over the world of art.
Lesson 4 - Legacy and Revivals

Art has a tendency to have a comeback, but why? Today we learn when and why the styles of the European Middle ages kept on returning to grace us with even more beautiful buildings in more recent centuries.

Tutor: Dr. Lillian Cespedes Gonzalez
Dr. Lillian Cespedes Gonzalez is a historian with a PhD in history from the University of Winchester (UK). She specialises in medievalism, the Vikings, gender studies, popular culture, and cultural identity. She is an educator and has worked at the University of Winchester, teaching the Golden Age of Spain as well as working on different research projects. Her academic work has also taken her to the world of publishing and editorial work. She used to be the director for Revista Medieval and the image editor at the Royal Studies Journal and has contributed to other publications as an ad hoc copyeditor.
