Description

Known as one of the world’s oldest living cities of the world, Varanasi carries a rhythm of life where devotion, tradition, and celebration flow as naturally as the river Ganges itself. From the grandeur of Dev Deepawali, when the ghats shimmer with countless lamps, to the joyous processions of Holi or the uncanny atmosphere of Masaano ki Holi, the solemnity of Mahashivaratri, the pandal hopping in Janmashtami, and the sacred performances of Ramleela leading into Dussehra, every festival here is marked by distinct rites and age-old practices. What makes them remarkable is not only their spiritual depth but also the way they bring together entire communities—priests, pilgrims, musicians, artisans, and ordinary families—each adding their own note to the city’s festive symphony. If you are interested in exploring the plethora of festivals celebrated in this holy city of India, this talk/tour will be the perfect one for you!

Professional Tour Guide

Diptarup G.
Diptarup G.

I’m Dr Diptarup Ghosh Dastidar, a research fellow at Banaras Hindu University, India. My PhD thesis deals with comics studies and spatiality, but my interests span farther wide into popular culture, gender studies, and Indology. I have taught at various universities in India and am currently teaching literature and language to school kids in Uttar Pradesh. Living in the historic city of Varanasi (aka Benares), I have been driven into learning and talking about ancient Indian scriptures, mythology, and philosophy. I am very passionate about socialising and I love lecturing! I’m also a musician and vocalist in the alt-rock band – The Spring Leaves – while I’m not teaching, or reading! I hope that I’ll be able to add some value to your experience with World Virtual Tours. Cheers!
