We’re diving deep into the vibrant history of rock music in India, exploring how it blossomed in the 50s and 60s in cities like Mumbai, Bangalore, and Kolkata—and how it began crossing cultural and linguistic boundaries in the 70s to become a truly pan-Indian phenomenon by the 90s. This is the second leg of our journey through India’s rock scene, focusing on the latter half of the 20th century. You’ll discover the iconic rock bands that inspired a generation and, of course, enjoy listening to their timeless music! Missed the first talk? No problem! We’ll make sure you’re up to speed with all the highlights from before the 70s, so you can sit back, relax, and rock on with us till the 90s!

I’m Dr Diptarup Ghosh Dastidar, a research fellow at Banaras Hindu University, India. My PhD thesis deals with comics studies and spatiality, but my interests span farther wide into popular culture, gender studies, and Indology. I have taught at various universities in India and am currently teaching literature and language to school kids in Uttar Pradesh. Living in the historic city of Varanasi (aka Benares), I have been driven into learning and talking about ancient Indian scriptures, mythology, and philosophy. I am very passionate about socialising and I love lecturing! I’m also a musician and vocalist in the alt-rock band – The Spring Leaves – while I’m not teaching, or reading! I hope that I’ll be able to add some value to your experience with World Virtual Tours. Cheers!
