Description

In the ancient Maya world, gods and goddesses were at the center of everyday life, governing nature, agriculture, fertility, and the balance of the universe. In this webinar, we begin by introducing the main gods and goddesses of Maya religion, exploring their roles, characteristics, and the forces they controlled — from maize and rain to growth, renewal, and survival. Understanding who these deities were is essential to understanding how the Maya viewed the world around them. We then explore how these divine powers were honored through rituals and offerings, closely connected to agricultural cycles and seasonal change. These practices reveal how religion was deeply woven into daily life, community survival, and the relationship between humans and nature. Finally, we turn to art and iconography, examining how the gods were represented in sculpture, ceramics, reliefs, and codices. Learning to recognize these images helps us better understand Maya beliefs and the symbolic language through which the sacred was expressed. An engaging and accessible journey into the religious heart of Maya civilization, where gods, ritual life, and sacred imagery come together.
