Description

The Mahabharata is the second of the two primary epics that encompass the cultural identity, belief systems, and ancient oral history of the Indian people, and is hailed as the most complex text ever conceived in the epic tradition. Written and imparted to his disciples by the compiler of the four Vedas, Ved Vyasa, many scholars refer to The Mahabharata as the fifth Veda, among other texts. This WVT session will introduce the framework of the narrative and discuss the core themes and issues that mark The Mahabharata as a fundamentally Indian text and relate to how it is relevant in the minds of Indians to the present day. If you are curious to know in depth about the biggest epic ever written, this talk is the one you need to attend!

Professional Tour Guide

Diptarup G.
Diptarup G.

I’m Dr Diptarup Ghosh Dastidar, a research fellow at Banaras Hindu University, India. My PhD thesis deals with comics studies and spatiality, but my interests span farther wide into popular culture, gender studies, and Indology. I have taught at various universities in India and am currently teaching literature and language to school kids in Uttar Pradesh. Living in the historic city of Varanasi (aka Benares), I have been driven into learning and talking about ancient Indian scriptures, mythology, and philosophy. I am very passionate about socialising and I love lecturing! I’m also a musician and vocalist in the alt-rock band – The Spring Leaves – while I’m not teaching, or reading! I hope that I’ll be able to add some value to your experience with World Virtual Tours. Cheers!
