India has what is perhaps the largest pantheon of gods and goddesses across the globe. And this number is multiplied further given that all the major gods have different names, personas, and forms in the different states of India and all of them are worshipped separately. Whether you know nothing about Hindu mythology or you have a general idea about the cosmic entities of the Indian subcontinent, this session is right for you if you want a comprehensive understanding of all the major and minor gods, deities, and avatars worshipped by Indians. We shall begin with the oldest of elemental gods and journey through the birth of the world as we know it with the Hindu Trinity, ending with an account of smaller deities and demigods that appear later in history.

I’m Dr Diptarup Ghosh Dastidar, a research fellow at Banaras Hindu University, India. My PhD thesis deals with comics studies and spatiality, but my interests span farther wide into popular culture, gender studies, and Indology. I have taught at various universities in India and am currently teaching literature and language to school kids in Uttar Pradesh. Living in the historic city of Varanasi (aka Benares), I have been driven into learning and talking about ancient Indian scriptures, mythology, and philosophy. I am very passionate about socialising and I love lecturing! I’m also a musician and vocalist in the alt-rock band – The Spring Leaves – while I’m not teaching, or reading! I hope that I’ll be able to add some value to your experience with World Virtual Tours. Cheers!
