Description
Discover the heart-wrenching and mesmerizing history of the Prague Jewish Quarter, known as Josefov, as we explore its enchanting exterior.
While we won’t be able to step inside the synagogues, we’ll delve deep into the stories and architectural marvels that make this district an essential part of Prague’s cultural heritage.
Prague’s skyline is famous for its red rooftops and towering spires, but tucked within this picturesque cityscape lies the hauntingly beautiful and historically complex Prague Jewish Quarter. It is a testament to the enduring legacy of one of Europe’s oldest and largest Jewish communities.
The Spanish Synagogue – A Gem of Moorish Architecture Our journey begins with the magnificent Spanish Synagogue, a striking example of Spanish and Moorish architectural fusion. This awe-inspiring structure, also known as the “Old School,” was crafted in 1868.
Maisel Synagogue – A Glimpse into Prague’s Golden Age Next, we’ll visit the Maisel Synagogue, constructed in 1592 under the patronage of Mordecai Maisel, the Mayor of the Prague Jewish Town. It stands as a relic from the golden age of the ghetto in the late 16th century.
Stroll Down Parizska Street Our tour takes us along the elegant Parizska Street, where we’ll admire the charming facades of art-nouveau buildings, providing a glimpse into the architectural splendor of Prague.
The Old-New Synagogue – A Living Heritage Though we cannot enter, we’ll appreciate the exterior of the Old-New Synagogue, which is the oldest synagogue in Europe still in use. Dating back to the 13th century, it stands as a living testament to Prague’s enduring Jewish legacy.
Pinkas Synagogue – A Touching Holocaust Memorial The walls of this synagogue bear the names of every Jew from Prague who perished in the Holocaust.
Jewish Cemetery – Layers of History We’ll also explore the Jewish cemetery, a remarkable testament to history’s layers. With 100,000 people buried in five layers, each layer representing 20,000 souls, it serves as a solemn reminder of the depth of the Jewish experience in Prague.
