Description
How are Chinese temples (Daoist or Buddhist) like and unlike Christian churches? This talk looks at the typical ground plans, monumental designs, warrior/contemplative images, and performance spaces of such religious buildings. It will consider how they reflect—and potentially evoke—ideals of high or low arousal, with positive or negative emotions, as East Asian traditional tendencies, found by cultural psychologists, contrasting with Western melodramatic (good versus evil) values.
