Description

The pyramid is the most iconic monument of ancient Egypt. The great pyramids of Giza, great human-made mountains of stone, are some of the oldest and most impressive structures still standing, made 4600 years ago with only stone and copper tools. They are not the only pyramids in Egypt – far from it, as four were built before and dozens after. We will explore the rise and fall of pyramids (literally and figuratively) over 1500 years, exploring how ideas about architecture, royal power, divinity, and the practicalities of tomb robbers and economics shaped how kings (and eventually nobles) were buried in Egypt at its heights.

I am a Ph.D. student at the University of Pennsylvania, studying ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia. I have worked on many topics, including frog-shaped stone vessels from the earliest periods of Egypt, the tombs of the Theban Necropolis, and Assyrian royal propaganda. I have also excavated in Egypt at the ancient town of Wah-Sut, a settlement for the workers of the temple of pharaoh Senwosret III.
